About the book:
India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancee took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who’ll accept her – an enigmatic and mysterious man from America. A man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he’s ill. Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won’t tell India why any old one won’t do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London’s best streets.
I loved India’s spunk! She’s a spitfire in this book and we first meet her serving Eddie some long overdue tongue-lashing for swindling her off her inheritance. Who’s Eddie you ask? He’s the guy who promised India’s dad that he’d marry her and take care of her but instead dumps her and takes over her dad’s business, leaving her homeless, heartbroken and well…without an inheritance. Don;t you just hate that?
There were other characters too and it helps that Mr. Glass or Matthew or Matt, is just so mysterious. He does not want to share information, especially not with India and a thing or two happens and you can’t help but wish he’d be more open with her.
As the first book in the series, I loved it!
It’s got a great pace, very prominent and well developed characters and a story-line that you would love.
My favorite lines from the book:
“Miss Steele,” he said, tearing his gaze away from the window. “I must ask you something about that exchange with Mr. Lawson. Can I, without risk of my head being bitten off?”
Things tend to fall into perspective when your life hangs in the balance.
